My husband always ask this: what do you do all day?<br />

So I decided to do a short video to show him what I do when he is away at work. 😂Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6613345837868734731.post-32999312908829122422020-02-19T21:29:00.001+08:002020-02-19T21:29:19.045+08:00KR husband x SG Wife's short trip to Suwon<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="270" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/aYfVteyi2G4" width="480"></iframe>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6613345837868734731.post-65377636484077552112020-02-19T11:03:00.001+08:002020-02-19T11:08:07.025+08:00Living in Korea<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It's been almost 4 months since I moved to Korea 😃</div>
<br />
We initially stayed in Daejeon with his parents and later on moved to Gimpo on our own. We're currently staying in a really cozy 2 bedroom on a higher floor, and on a clear day we can see a small part of the Han River.<br />
<br />
I'm finally a housewife now! I can't decide which is better: living the care-free life now, a life free of work-stress, evening calls, work politics VS. a stressful work life but earning a comfortable salary and spending money without any second thoughts. My daily routine starts with making breakfast for kimchi boy at 7 in the morning, followed by an endless marathon of Taiwanese and Korean shows, occasionally I sit by the window to read a book, sometimes a trip to the supermarket nearby, and the day ends with preparing dinner.<br />
<br />
It's been a little difficult adapting to life here. It's funny how I seldom meet my friends in Singapore anyway but I feel immensely lonely in Korea. Maybe it's walking on the streets or in the malls, and hearing people speak only in Korean and not understanding the language. Maybe it's not being able to get around or do even the simplest tasks on my own, and having to rely on my husband for even something as simple as buying fresh meat from a butcher. I can't call the English-speaking immigration hotline on my own because they seem to have trouble understanding me (It is my Singaporean accent? 🤔). I secretly have a bit of fear even going to a restaurant because I was once denied ketchup at Lotteria (a popular fast food chain in Korea) and I couldn't understand what the lady at the food counter was trying to say when I asked why I couldn't get ketchup with my fries and burger. Everyone was looking. Sounds silly but it was an uncomfortable and embarrassing experience for me. I had planned to pick up Korean at a language school but put this on hold due to the recent coronavirus outbreak.<br />
<br />
Despite all these, I'm still positive this is the right move for us. My husband has been extremely supportive and accommodating ever since we moved here, and I know he is trying his best to make me feel comfortable living here. Right now, I'm just thankful for everything we have ♥<br />

<br /></div>
<div>
We are now living in Singapore, we've both left our jobs and trying to figure out what to do/where to be next. I've finally taken a career break after many sleepless nights wondering what would be the best choice - I left my career when it was at it's peak; I was working as a recruiter for a multinational company and drawing a salary that was much higher than most my peers. I never regretted this decision, although there are days I feel anxious thinking about the money I could earned if I had continued. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
My husband left the Korean company he was working for after a difficult 2 years. We learned that Koreans will always be Koreans even if the KR firm is based in another country. He's taking a short break to prepare for his AICPA exams and I really hope he completes it this time.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I would never trade anything for this moment! It feels like the weekends everyday and we get to wake up, do chores & run errands together.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Here are some photos from our winter trip in Feb.</div>

Sometimes I use very strong words when speaking about Korea, and on good days I try to focus on happier things likes its proximity to Japan, being able to have our own car and own apartment in Korea, being able to go back to Kaohsiung easily, four seasons etc. The thought of being in a place I don't want to be <i>and all alone</i> scares me.</div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6613345837868734731.post-33076286005618805652016-06-18T12:35:00.001+08:002016-06-18T12:35:35.942+08:00Wedding Prep<div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">I have passed the frustrated + emotional stage now!! </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Learning to take things as it comes. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Here's what I received from the US that made me happy: bridesmaids + maid of honor gifts for the girls!!! Although we have done some planning, there are still many <i>adult</i> questions to think about:</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">1. How/when to get the F6 foreign spouse visa - I heard its a torturous process with different people from the embassy/government bodies saying different things on what is required for the application. Still very much in love and making this tough LDR work.<br />
<br />
I have finally completed my undergraduate studies at NUS, back from a usual long Korean trip and joined the workforce. It is funny how as a student, I'd always thought that I would prefer working. Now that I've started working, I realize that it the absolute opposite. There are more responsibilities as a working adult - you meet difficult colleagues (vs. lazy project mates), you face unreasonable bosses (vs. fierce/strict teachers), people are less forgiving towards mistakes.. and most importantly, <i>as a person in a long distance relationship</i>, you don't get to travel whenever and go on long trips. Your holidays are restricted to the number of annual leaves you get, and they have to be approved before hand. Unlike in school where you can just don't turn up for a few days or use the 3-month university vacations to travel.<br />
<br />
Recently I've been getting more and more stress about living in Korea in the near future. How can I live in an environment that I dislike so much? How can I go about my day to day activities without being able to speak Korean? It's been almost three years and I'm still procrastinating about learning Korean properly.<br />
<br />
Well, the only happy thing now is that Kimchi boy is visiting Singapore this July!!!<br />
<br />

This is their second time in Korea and the first was more than 10 years ago with a singapore tour group. It was a short 10-day trip (4 days in Fukuoka, Japan). I really enjoyed spending time with my parents, together with kimchi boy and his family. My parents' trip to Korea made me realize that I am still a mummy's girl and I just cannot imagine life without my parents if I ever have to move to Korea :( </div><div><br></div><div>Kimchi boy's parents were great hosts.. <div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
I probably have mentioned how difficult it is to find non korean-fushion western/international food in Korea. Even in pasta shops, there would be kimchi or radish on the table. We once went to a Mexican restaurant that did not serve kimchi! <i>Imagine our excitement. </i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Ever since I saw kimchi in pasta and pizzas, I no longer trust western restaurants in korea. I've started cooking with very very simple ingredients:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-NgTaCfwbER8/VLdQzi9KNSI/AAAAAAAAIjs/OQL2yBAk_X8/s640/blogger-image--1457872322.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-NgTaCfwbER8/VLdQzi9KNSI/AAAAAAAAIjs/OQL2yBAk_X8/s1600/blogger-image--1457872322.jpg"></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Lastly, here are some mandatory pictures of our cute dog, Maxi. He should be almost a year old now. </div>

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6613345837868734731.post-6423179901475416212015-01-09T15:09:00.001+08:002015-01-09T15:17:04.875+08:00Public Transport in Daejeon, Korea<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">These days I've been learning how to take the public transport alone. It's been something I've dreaded for almost two years each time I visit him in Korea. Public transport in Korea is efficient</span><i style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;"> (at least in Seoul and Daejeon)</i><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">, BUT what I do not enjoy is the travel experience - ahjummas pushing and shoving their way, non-existence of a queue, unruly commuters rushing for seats etc. As a Singaporean, I've seen a lot of ungracious people - <i>I admit that I do brisk walk a little to get seats sometimes</i> - but Koreans (sometimes) bring it to a whole new level. Just sometimes, because I've met nice Koreans who bother to queue up or say excuse me when passing through too. But some don't seem to understand the concept of intruding into a stranger's personal space. Sure, I know.. there are unruly commuters everywhere around the world. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
So these days while riding the subway, I started to wonder if this is the kind of life I want to live, and the kind of society I want my kids to grow up in. I cannot imagine taking the public transport on a daily basis. Then I think about how I get to pursue hobbies and do things that I enjoy without having to work after I get married, and conclude that this relationship is still worth holding on to. Haha I'm just kidding! I believe whatever society or culture it is, the important thing is that my child be raised in a loving environment, and an environment with the right values and morals.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Anyway, </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">

I am usually very upset by news of plane accidents because the thought of having to die alone or die drowning scares me. During the Malaysian Airlines flight 370 and flight 17 tragedies, I was also in Korea. Right now, the last thing I want to do is to take a plane back to Singapore. What I was really sad about is that the Koreans who were onboard (the family of three) were Christian missionaries spreading the gospel in Indonesia. Why do God allow such things to happen to anyone, <i>whether Christians or non-Christians</i>, and especially to people who are doing God's work?<div><br></div><div>-------------------------------------------<br><div><br></div><div>I am back from my short trip to Taiwan and kimchi boy surprised me with a mini Christmas tree when I arrived home in Daejeon. Having a Christmas tree meant a lot to me because every year, my family would put up a huge Christmas tree together.. While in Korea, I don't think people actually celebrate Christmas.. At least not for his family. We even managed to find a log cake which was extremely difficult to find in Korea! I am really touched by his efforts to make Christmas special for me. </div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-qS3kUjrfqiQ/VKKlVdnQCOI/AAAAAAAAIi0/zoqk_L1k9CI/s640/blogger-image-826847897.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-qS3kUjrfqiQ/VKKlVdnQCOI/AAAAAAAAIi0/zoqk_L1k9CI/s640/blogger-image-826847897.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-sgsZMvl6Has/VKKlW2wGj2I/AAAAAAAAIi8/vX37PQT0cpY/s640/blogger-image--1860819810.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-sgsZMvl6Has/VKKlW2wGj2I/AAAAAAAAIi8/vX37PQT0cpY/s640/blogger-image--1860819810.jpg"></a></div><br></div><br></div></div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6613345837868734731.post-13983734962326869672014-12-30T21:01:00.001+08:002014-12-30T21:01:08.470+08:00Why do Korean ahjumas or ahjummas have curly hair?So I asked kimchi boy: why do 99.9% of ahjummas (aka korean ladies who are .. older) in Korea perm their hair? It was as if all ladies went to the same hair salon to get the same exact hairstyle. <div><br></div><div>I am not sure whether he was joking but he said that there is actually a sad story behind it - many of them are from post-war period and in those days, people were poor and they had to perm their hair so that they don't have to wash it so often and it was easy to maintain (it was the cheaper option). This does not make sense to me because.. Don't you have to pay money to get a perm -.- anyway he said that a perm is the cheapest in a hair salon, and sadly, there are a fair majority that think they actually look nice with permed hair.</div><div><br></div><div>Is this true?</div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6613345837868734731.post-17136793610973098702014-12-09T21:25:00.001+08:002014-12-09T21:26:40.250+08:00Singapore to Seoul with Vietnam Airlines<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Vietnam Airlines was fine. Decent service, decent food, cheapest flight available (paid about SGD600 for a December ticket).. But worst transit experience ever. The airport at Ho Chi Minh City was probably the worst I've ever been to. Unclear directions/signage, messy layout - everything you fear about when taking a transit flight. At least the transfer counter staff was helpful. Don't think I will ever use Vietnam airlines again unless it is really REALLY cheap. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-Vv8oq-cdhQ4/VIb4QMidXYI/AAAAAAAAIh0/yJoq4aMEQJk/s640/blogger-image-1072918272.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-Vv8oq-cdhQ4/VIb4QMidXYI/AAAAAAAAIh0/yJoq4aMEQJk/s640/blogger-image-1072918272.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Ca5IYM-phmU/VIb4S-RFWVI/AAAAAAAAIh8/N3JiSXuCJzs/s640/blogger-image--887737913.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Ca5IYM-phmU/VIb4S-RFWVI/AAAAAAAAIh8/N3JiSXuCJzs/s640/blogger-image--887737913.jpg"></a></div></div>My two meals from SIN to SGN, then SGN to ICN. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Anyway, I made it to Korea safely! <br />
I will be flying to Korea tomorrow night and will arrive on Thursday morning.<br />
Tomorrow marks the last day of my NUS undergraduate life. After taking the final paper, I will officially be part of the Singapore's "middle-class" (as soon as I find a job), have to manage my own finances, can no longer ask my parents for money etc. Quite depressing to think about at this point.. But first, I will enjoy myself in Korea till mid-February 2015.<br />
<br />
This is going to be one exciting winter! Yesterday Korea received its first snow - which was something I have always looked forward to but never got a chance to catch, because Real Estate papers are always one of the last few in the NUS exam schedule. The exciting part of this winter is that my parents will be visiting us in late January!<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Here's a pic of our baby. No longer a baby though. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
He now has a permanent home in Kimchi boy's backyard.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I will be updating more when I arrive in Korea. For now, I shall contain my excitement and attempt to revise for my final paper tomorrow.</div>
